I took a walk … along the river

I took a walk today
behind the condo parking lot –
pushing through the underbrush
to the path along the river

the Hockanum flows slowly here
more a stream than river
it pauses now and then
in marshy ponds –
home to goose and heron

clusters of skunk cabbage
sprout through the mulch
of last years leaves

in a tall bare tree
a woodpecker

the path, thickly veined with roots,
skirts fallen trees
and crosses short planked bridges

It emerges into sunshine
behind the dollar store
I walk back along the roadway

with electric saws and clippers
clear the detritus from winter
